Self-Reflection

(1) How do you think you are doing so far in your senior project and why?  AE, P, AP, CR, or NC
I think I have like a P in my senior project because my grade report says so. xb Also, I feel that I have actually learned a little more about what a biomedical engineer does. At my service learning, I can see the kind of work the BME does as well as learn about how they think. My service learning allows me to take about several pieces of hospital equipment and look at the circuit boards and see how everything is connected. He has also shown me the kind of paperwork they must fill out and how everything is organized. Also, through my research, I have gained a better understanding of the kind of schooling an individual must get and how competitive the field may get in the future.

(2) What one thing do you think you have done well on and why?

I think I have done well with my service learning because even though I only go once a week, I get a chance to do things hands on. Usually, students must go to college and get an internship to work within a hospital.

(3) What is one thing you would like to improve on and why?

I want to be able to work with more complicated and essential equipment and possibly do repairs as well in order to get the full experience. That will take time however and for now, I must learn as much as possible in the time I am allowed.

Science Fair Proposal

1. What is your hypothesis?
If someone wears nail polish, then the accuracy of the pulse oximeter will decrease.

2. Identify the dependent (produced), independent (manipulated) and control variables in your hypothesis.
The independent variable is the color of the nail or the type of artificial nail.

The dependent variable is the accuracy of the pulse oximeter.
The control is the colors of the nail, thickness, the person volunteering for the experiment, and the type of pulse oximeter used.

3. What is the connection between your science fair project and your senior project EQ?
The connection is that Biomedical Engineers have to know how different medical equipment works. All hospitals must have a pulse oximeter of some kind and this will allow me to start to realize how to learn about something in the field and gain an understanding if I get into the field.

4. How will you perform the experiment?  Include the equipment you plan on using.
I will try to perform the experiment by first checking accuracy with regular nails and using that as a starting base. Then I will ask volunteers to wear different shades of nail polish and then using a finger probe to measure the oxygen saturation within the blood. I will then do the experiment a third time using artificial nails. I plan on using several colors of nail polish, artificial nails, a patient monitor which shows the pulse and oxygen saturation of a patient, and a finger probe.

5. Which category will your project be listed under?  (For a full list of categories, go to the iPoly Physics webpage, then to the Science Fair tab.)
It will go under physics because I am experimenting about spectrographic readings.

What I've Learned So Far

1) Since I have started working on senior project, I have learned more about Biomedical Engineering and the different kinds of areas you can work in. I am starting to learn a lot about being in field servicing at San Dimas Community Hospital. I am also looking into other, more specialized fields as well. I feel that through my research, I will become more knowledgeable about Biomeds within hospitals and the kind of work they do. I have learned how to communicate, from talking to several people in order to find my service learning, and I have learned that hospital Biomeds, must learn to talk to people. This is because sometimes, hospital employees may become flustered even if the problem is small so you must take control of the situation. I have also learned how to think more analytically by observing objects and figuring out what may be wrong with it.

My San Dimas Community Hospital Volunteer Uniform and Badge.

3) My interviews were very helpful in getting an idea of what a Biomed does within a hospital. Some research I have done has also taught me a little more about the different machines that are used in a hospital so that I may have a better knowledge base when working with the Biomeds.

Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

1) I plan on doing extra community service hours at San Dimas Community Hospital for my independent Component.
2) I believe it will meet the 30 hour requirement because I will be keeping a record as well as having my supervisor signing off on my hours. I am currently on a 2 hour/ week schedule and am planning to increase it to 4 or 6 hours per week.
3) My independent component relates to my topic because I will be working in the hospital with a biomedical engineer. I will be able to see and learn how he does his work and what method seems to be the more efficient. I will also get to see how he improves himself as well as the technologies that he is required to maintain in the hospital.

Defining the Essential Question

1) What is your EQ?

What is most important for success as a Biomedical Engineer?

2) Define the words in your EQ to make sure we are on the same page regarding what your EQ means.

Most Important: The different things that an individual must do in order to become a biomed as well as what he/she must do to always improve and be the most efficient. For example, schooling, training, research, and certain mentality, etc.

Success: I see success as something that gives you a sense of fulfillment. Like being the most helpful to the community, contributing to a new idea, constantly improving to be the best, and also having a career and being proficient enough at it to have a stable lifestyle.

Biomedical Engineer: There are different fields within biomedical engineering. I will most likely be focusing a lot on the BME technicians within a hospital due to that being my service learning and the availability of sources.

3) What are some possible answers to your EQ?

You must apply yourself in school and your career in order to remain up to date with new technology.

You should become BME certified which will allow for many opportunities to arise.

As a BME, constantly talk to other BME's and vendors, staying informed in different technologies and to remain efficient in how you do your job.

4)What has been your most important source and why? Be specific. If it is a person, name them and what they do, if it is an article, book or video, name the title and author.

My most important source has been Francis Yonzon, a Biomed Engineer at Chino Valley Medical Center. He was my first interview and was able to explain things from experience. I didn't know much about BME technicians and it was a new field to me. After meeting with him, I think that I am a little more prepared for what to expect as I research more and what to expect during my service learning.

Second Interview Questions

1) What exactly is your role in the hospital?

2) What kind of schooling did you have to go through in order to reach where you are now?

3) How long have you been in this profession?

4) What kinds of medical cases does this hospital take or specialize in?

5) Do you feel that your career choice is an enjoyable one? And do you think anybody can do it?

Presentation Reflection

1.  In what way did the first interview affect your presentation?  Please explain, be specific and use an example.

My interview affected my presentation because a majority of my presentation was from my interview. I did not use every detail but I mentioned some of the more important things. The information about the different fields within a specialized BioMed field was from my interview.

2.  What you say stood out about your presentation performance and why?

I think what stood out may be that I pointed out how vast BioMedical Engineering is and the reason I want to do it as my senior project.

3.  What was the most challenging to do and why?

Getting my interview. Everyone is always busy and moving between hospitals so it is hard to get ahold of somebody that is willing to give me the time for an interview.

Interview Check

*UPDATE*
I have interviewed Francis Yonzon, a Biomedical Engineer at Chino Valley Medical Center.

I have not established my first interview yet, however, I have contacted different places for my service learning and have contacted a hospital asking for an interview with the director. I will post up details later this week about who I will be interviewing as it is not definite at this moment.

In addition to the questions I am required to ask, I will also be asking the person I am interviewing,
1) What kinds of things should I be doing in order to be on my way to becoming a Biomedical Engineer?

2) How important are Biomedical Engineers to the medical field?

3) I want to get into something like Biomechanics, Bionics, or Cellular/Tissue/ Gentic Engineering. What do you recommend I do to get closer to being able to work in one of those fields?

4) I am taking some classes at Cal Poly Pomona and was wondering which kinds of classes will help me in Biomedical Engineering?

Topic: Bio-Medical Engineering

What is your topic?  Why? And what do you hope to accomplish after studying this topic all year?

My topic is Bio-Medical Engineering. I have decided to choose this topic because it is what I what to have a career in. I feel that it is interesting and can change the world as the profession progresses and expands. It is a medical field with many different branches and each branch has its own application in medicine. I want to study and research Bio-Medical Engineering and hopefully be able to decide on which area I want to specialize in for my career.
